Our mission

We believe that now is the time for the United Kingdom to reform its benefit system and to base it on a Universal Basic Income (also known as a Citizen’s Income).

Universal Basic Income would provide financial security for all, so that everyone has the resources they need to fulfil their potential. We urge others to express support for the principle of a Basic Income with the aim of making it an issue in the next General Election. Basic Income is a regular payment made to every individual, not means tested, non-withdrawable and without work conditions. It would :

  • Guarantee everyone a secure base which ensures that work always pays

  • Replace the complex benefits system with a scheme fit for the 21st century

  • Provide us all, including people who need extra income related to sickness, disability and housing, with the freedom to develop and contribute our talents, and the dignity we all deserve.

With your support we can press politicians to back this idea and make it a key campaign issue at the next General election.

If you agree with us please endorse the above statement and we would also love to hear why you support a basic income.

I work as a freelancer and I have a daughter who recently was in hospital for a couple of months with a serious unexpected brain condition and massive infection. Although my work is steady and I love my work, it would take the pressure off having to rush back after very frequent follow up hospital appointments and instead have a bit of family time with her and a treat to the pictures or shopping or whatever, which is something we can’t afford to do. She’s not working and I don’t get paid if I don’t work, which is fair enough. I don’t believe that everybody who would receive universal basic income would be disincentived to work however it would increase the amount of money splashed out in the high street.

It removes anxiety, saves money and leaves people to contribute to society in their own way. The automation of industry is unstoppable in the quest for greater corporate profit.

An income by right when at home looking after children is exactly what I needed when I was doing that role. It would have improved my self esteem to have not been dependant on anyone else for cash.

During my life I have lived through four recessions. I have also been unemployed several times and struggled to feed myself. I have lost my home. And I am one of many thousands who have had this happen to them. Life’s fortunes can go up and down and the effects can be devastating.

A Guaranteed Basic income would have made it so much easier to get back on my feet. To live a proper life and contribute to society instead of taking from it. The economy, and all the jobs in it, depends on having money to spend and putting money IN peoples’ pockets is the best way to get that money into the economy, making livelihoods more secure, local economies stronger and people safer. Who knows? It might even stop the next recession.
