Our mission

We believe that now is the time for the United Kingdom to reform its benefit system and to base it on a Universal Basic Income (also known as a Citizen’s Income).

Universal Basic Income would provide financial security for all, so that everyone has the resources they need to fulfil their potential. We urge others to express support for the principle of a Basic Income with the aim of making it an issue in the next General Election. Basic Income is a regular payment made to every individual, not means tested, non-withdrawable and without work conditions. It would :

  • Guarantee everyone a secure base which ensures that work always pays
  • Replace the complex benefits system with a scheme fit for the 21st century
  • Provide us all, including people who need extra income related to sickness, disability and housing, with the freedom to develop and contribute our talents, and the dignity we all deserve.

With your support we can press politicians to back this idea and make it a key campaign issue at the next General election.

If you agree with us please endorse the above statement and we would also love to hear why you support a basic income.

A universal basic income would mean financial security for everyone, in a world where stable employment is increasingly precarious.

I support the basic income because it is the best expression of what a modern welfare state should do: Provide people with security so that they can make life decisions for the good of themselves and others without the fear of inhumane consequences. Secure People Dare.

In my opinion, the basic income can allow a new generation of people to challenge establishment neo-liberalism and save the world from its worst excesses. Anthropogenic Global Warming, Bio-degradation, Pandemics, Fundamentalism and Erosion of the Commons all threaten our destruction and our current system just isn’t up to the job.

A universal basic income would grant me the freedom to pursue the hobbies and life goals that working life prevents me from achieving. It would grant me greater happiness and brighter future. Giving the time and means to make my interests profitable.

Just makes sense in every way. I was brought up with it being on its way and so was my mother. My grandfather knew in the ’20s/30s that it would come.

As a single mother, in the past, I would have liked to feel allowed to spend more time looking after my children than feeling forced to work, often finding jobs that were a strain on me and my small family.

Regarding myself I have had ill health through my childhood and into my adulthood, making it hard to hold down a job. I have often felt inadequate due to the insidious ‘work ethic’ and ‘benefit scrounger’ mentality that pervades Britain. On at least two occasions I have been ill, trying my best but I have not been able to fill forms out sufficiently meaning my children and I have lost out on benefits. I had not been shown the resources for support and also come from a family that that would rather continue fiercely independent than admit failure. We have gone for weeks without any financial support and had to beg inadequate unofficial people for food, causing me embarrassment and shame, this should not be a reality for anybody in the twentieth century. Although my health conditions meaning I could and possibly should apply for disability I do not want the stigma attached or to undergo the arduous and demeaning methods to get it that are in place currently. At present I am now with a partner who has a part time job as he has children also and we both have lots of parental responsibilities between us. I also have a part time job but I am off sick and unsure of what will happen in the foreseeable future.

    There are so many reasons I think basic income should come into action;

    • The increase of automatons and meaningless jobs.

    • The whole of society benefiting; stabilising the economy, less likelihood of people taking advantage of the benefit system and less likelihood of people falling through the net as it were when they should be receiving financial support from the government.

    • More volunteer schemes being put in place where the works outcome is educational benefits and certificates, that could lead to other vocations.

    • More time for people to help their family, enjoy the satisfaction of civic duties, to take up community, healing and creative opportunities which would enrich our society and culture.

There’s not the work to go round and unemployment will continue to rise. Without a UBI there will be immense, unnecessary suffering. It’s also economically more sound than the current system which places stress on health, social care and criminal justice system to pick up the pieces of this suffering which is real for benefit claimants and people on low incomes.
